It was announced on Wednesday that the New York Knicks and Kemba Walker had come to an agreement that will see the former All-Star remain sidelined for the remainder of the season.
While most initially thought that this was the choice of the team, that may not be the case. In a statement, Leon Rose said that they fully support “his decision,” insinuating that it was Walker’s choice to be sidelined.
This may seem odd, but with the trajectory that Knicks are on this year, it makes sense. Rose also mentioned that Walker plans to “prepare for next season.”
With that in mind, it’s highly likely that Walker ends up on a different team next year. What five teams around the league should take a shot on Walker?
5 teams that should target Kemba Walker this summer: Charlotte Hornets
This one was too obvious to not be mentioned. Kemba Walker spent the large majority of his career with the Charlotte Hornets, so it would make sense for them to bring him back.
Walker would be a solid backup point guard behind LaMelo Ball, as they just traded away Ish Smith at the trade deadline. He wouldn’t have to play many minutes but could prove some solid floor spacing.
However, spending money on Walker might not be in the best interest of the Hornets, as they have some other issues to deal with such as their struggling center position.
That being said, the storyline of Walker heading back to Charlotte would be a heartwarming one. Seeing him head back to where it all started would be very fun.

5 teams that should target Kemba Walker this summer: Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks don’t have a ton of guard depth on their roster right now, and even though George Hill is injured, he’s been struggling this year.

Adding Kemba Walker as a backup point guard could end up being solid for the current defending champs this offseason. He’d be a tad bit expensive for their taste, but he’d also play his role well.

Walker could give the Bucks a slight scoring boost off the bench alongside guys such as Pat Connaughton and Bobby Portis. The veteran would be able to give them quality minutes.

His role on the Bucks would be a lot smaller than it was on the Knicks, as is the case with most of the teams mentioned here. That’s why he’d be able to thrive.

5 teams that should target Kemba Walker this summer: LA Clippers

The LA Clippers have been looking for a point guard to pair alongside Kawhi Leonard and Paul George for a while now, and although Walker probably shouldn’t be starting, he could still give them good minutes.

From here on out in his career, Walker needs to be in a position where he doesn’t have to be a focal point of the offense. That would be the case with the Clippers.

Walker could come off the bench, or start if needed, and provide a nice scoring spark, some floor-spacing, as well as some secondary playmaking.

With the roster reconstruction the Clippers have been going through over the past few years, adding a veteran and former All-Star like Walker would be solid.

5 teams that should target Kemba Walker this summer: New Orleans Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans have CJ McCollum and Devonte’ Graham as the main focal points of their backcourt, but adding another seasoned veteran could do them well.

They have made it clear that they want to compete for championships, and having a guy like Kemba Walker on the roster could help them do just that.

Again, it’s crucial that Walker wouldn’t have to take on a huge offensive burden wherever he lands. And luckily, the Pelicans have enough other offensive weapons to make that possible.

There’s a chance that they don’t want to spend a ton of money on a backup point guard, but if they truly want to focus on making the postseason, Walker could help in limited minutes.

5 teams that should target Kemba Walker this summer: Minnesota Timberwolves

Just like the Pelicans, the Minnesota Timberwolves are a young team looking to make that next jump and be a consistent postseason threat every season.

They added Patrick Beverley this past offseason to give them that edge, so adding more quality pieces should be their next plan of attack, and Walker falls under that category.

Minnesota doesn’t have a ton of depth on their roster, so getting a veteran like Walker would certainly help. He would slot in nicely behind D’Angelo Russell and Beverley.

The 31-year-old might prefer to get traded to a title contender, but the T-Wolves could be a nice spot for him. He’d be able to help usher in a new era of Minnesota basketball alongside the rest of their current cast.
