With the deadline just under a month away, NBA trades are destined to start happening as teams across the association begin making moves. One division that has been noisy in the rumor mill is the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division, as several teams could be gearing up to make trades.
With that said, let us take a look at one target that could be worth pursuing for all five franchises in that division.
Atlantic Division NBA Trades: Toronto Raptors – Christian Wood
After going through a rough patch to start the season, the Toronto Raptors have turned things around quickly and now sit at eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
The Raptors do have the pieces in place to be a postseason team as is, but if they want to bolster their chances, they could consider swinging a trade for a potential All-Star in Christian Wood.
The 26-year-old has blossomed into a star since signing with the Houston Rockets, averaging an impressive 19.1 points, 9.8 boards, 1.9 assists, and one block in 81 total games.
Wood has been shrouded in trade controversy over the past several months, and if the big man is indeed on the market, opposing teams will be calling. Production like his could be a massive needle-mover for multiple organizations seeking frontcourt depth, particularly one such as the Raptors.
Adding Wood while presumably keeping Fred VanVleet and Pascal Siakam would form a lethal trio in Toronto that could cement their status as a playoff team in the East. Wood’s contract is a huge bargain at $13.7 million this season and $14.3 million next year, so it is reasonable financially.
Though the Raptors would have to make an incredibly compelling offer to the Rockets to get the prized big man, they have the assets to do just that, and this is a move they should consider.

Atlantic Division NBA Trades: Boston Celtics – Bryn Forbes

The Boston Celtics are a team that has all the pieces to be great but continues struggling to put them all together. Sitting at 10th place in the Eastern Conference, this team desperately needs to make a move at the deadline to keep their playoff hopes alive.

While it would not move the needle, trading for Bryn Forbes would be a step in the right direction to patch one of Boston’s significant flaws – their three-point shooting.

Boston is shooting a subpar 33.9 percent from behind the arc this season, the 22nd-worst mark in the association. Considering they rank 13th in three-point attempts per contest, these shooting woes have been a massive hindrance to their success.

Someone like Forbes, who has made a nice living by being an outstanding shooter, would help. The fifth-year sharpshooter has hit a scorching hot 41.2 percent of his career triples on 4.2 attempts per game. Primarily serving as a catch and shoot threat, Forbes would fit perfectly alongside Boston’s stars offensively.

After winning a championship with the Milwaukee Bucks last season, Forbes returned to the place he started his career – the San Antonio Spurs. The guard is currently playing 16.9 minutes per game with the Spurs, the second-lowest of his career behind his rookie season.

Though nothing has yet been reported, the Spurs could be willing to move him for the right price, given his minimal role on the team. Considering Forbes is on the books for $4.5 million this season, he is an affordable trade candidate for several teams.

Franchises like the Celtics looking for outside shooting would be wise to try and land the guard before the deadline.

Atlantic Division NBA Trades: Brooklyn Nets – Garrett Temple

The Brooklyn Nets do not exactly need to make a trade, and it would be challenging for them to do so in the first place due to their shortage of assets. Regardless, if they are looking to do something before the deadline, a low-risk trade for someone like Garrett Temple would be reasonable.

Temple, who recently played with the Nets during the 2019-20 season, has been a solid two-way player throughout his career. He is averaging a respectable 6.2 points per game while hitting 35.8 percent of his three-pointers to go along with some solid defense this season.

Adding Temple would give the Nets another rotation player that they can throw at opposing wings defensively, which could surely be useful in a potential playoff scenario if they run into Jayson Tatum or Jimmy Butler. He is not the flashiest name, but Temple would help bulk up the rotation, particularly on the defensive end.

The 35-year-old is making $4.9 million this season, meaning it would not take much for the Nets to bring him aboard from a financial perspective, and they could likely persuade the struggling New Orleans Pelicans to deal him.

Ultimately, the Nets do not need to make a move like this as they are arguably the title favorites when everyone is healthy, but it would not be the worst idea to add a familiar face like Temple as insurance.

Atlantic Division NBA Trades: Philadelphia 76ers: Tyrese Haliburton

The Philadelphia 76ers are arguably the most interesting team leading up to the trade deadline due to the dilemma they currently face with Ben Simmons.

After he requested a trade this past offseason following a playoff debacle, the 76ers have remained firm on their stance that they will not trade the guard unless they get a worthwhile haul in return.

While it seems like the 76ers will try to stay dug in until Damian Lillard or Bradley Beal potentially become available, one target they should consider instead is Tyrese Haliburton of the Sacramento Kings.

The Kings have been among the teams rumored to have interest in Simmons from the beginning, and it appears they are willing to get more aggressive nearing the trade deadline.

The Athletic’s Sam Amick recently reported that while the Kings would like to build the team around their backcourt of Haliburton and De’Aaron Fox, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/01/14/nba-trades-atlantic-division/"https://theathletic.com/3052221/2022/01/05/nba-trade-talk-russell-westbrooks-awkward-lakers-fit-the-hurting-hawks-and-more-sam-amicks-nba-notebook/?source=twitterhq%22 target="_blank" rel="noopener">both players are now considered available in trades (subscription required).

While Fox is a more recognizable name due to his star status in the league, Kyle Neubeck of Philly Voice reported that the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/01/14/nba-trades-atlantic-division/"https://www.phillyvoice.com/sixers-ben-simmons-trade-rumors-joel-embiid-tyrese-haliburton-deaaron-fox-analysis-latest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">76ers would likely need to move Fox to a third team to get the return they want, while Haliburton is someone they like in a bigger deal.

Although the 76ers already have a promising young piece leading the backcourt in Tyrese Maxey, someone like Haliburton could complement him and the rest of the team well.

The guard’s scoring, shooting, and playmaking are fantastic at 21-years-old, and he only continues getting better with each passing game. It will take more on Sacramento’s end to make a deal work financially and to Philadelphia’s liking, but Haliburton would be a reasonable target for the 76ers to acquire and finally end this ongoing Simmons drama that has followed them for months.

Atlantic Division NBA Trades: New York Knicks – Myles Turner

The New York Knicks have been connected to just about every rumored trade target there is as they look to make another playoff push this season. They showed their aggressiveness with a trade for Cam Reddish with the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday, but they might not be done just yet.

Currently sitting at 11th place in the Eastern Conference, they could use more help before the deadline to climb in the standings, and a player they reportedly see fitting is Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers.

SNY’s Ian Begley recently reported that there are people within the organization that see Turner as <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/01/14/nba-trades-atlantic-division/"https://sny.tv/articles/knicks-trade-deadline-miles-mcbride-obi-toppin-putback" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“someone worth pursuing.” That interest makes sense, given that Turner has cemented himself among the best shot-blocking big men in the league today as he currently leads the association in blocks this season, a feat he has achieved twice already.

Turner is also a solid player offensively, averaging 12.7 points per contest this season while shooting a passable 35 percent from three for his career. While the Knicks currently have a handful of talented players in the frontcourt alongside Julius Randle like Mitchell Robinson, Taj Gibson, and Nerlens Noel, Turner would be an immediate upgrade to make the Knicks a more formidable threat.

The Pacers big man is one of the most coveted players on the trade market after The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported earlier in the season that <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/01/14/nba-trades-atlantic-division/"https://theathletic.com/3011544/2021/12/13/optimism-for-a-kyrie-irving-return-the-latest-on-ben-simmons-trade-talks-and-more-nba-news-and-notes-inside-pass/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Indiana Pacers are willing to move him and several others (subscription required) on the roster for the right price.

The Knicks have the assets in tow to make an enticing offer for Turner, who is making a combined $35 million over the next two seasons. The big man would be a massive boost for New York’s defense while bringing versatility on offense, both of which would be incredibly useful to help them get back in the current playoff hunt.
