New York Knicks receive: 2022 2nd-Round Pick, 2023 2nd-Round Pick (via POR)
While Alec Burks is not a sexy name by any means, he is an experienced NBA veteran. Coming off a year where he averaged 11.7 Pts, 4.9 Reb, 3.0 Ast on 39% shooting from the field, 40% shooting from deep, and 82% from the line, his addition to this rotation could be solid.
His two-point shooting is a little concerning, as he shot only 41.9% on shots that were 10 feet or less, according to NBA.com tracking data. On the bright side, he shot 41.8% on catch-and-shoot threes and a scorching-hot 47% on wide-open ones.
He’s also a career 38% three-point shooter, shooting north of 40% the last three years, meaning he could be the knockdown shooter the Celtics so desperately need.
At 6’6, Burks has decent size for his position, which would boast well in Boston’s switch-heavy defense. He is by no means a defensive stopper, but on this team, he doesn’t need to be.
With all the elite defenders this team possesses, all he needs to do is be serviceable on that end. From a financial perspective, his contract is also very manageable. He is set to make roughly $10 million this year and has a $10.4 million team option for next year.
All things considered, a trade for Burks would be a very solid move for the front office.
Boston Celtics season came to a disappointing end this past week. After a remarkable turnaround in the middle of the season, Boston was able to put forth a very impressive postseason run. A run that included a sweep of the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/06/20/nba-trades-boston-celtics/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/brooklyn-nets/">Brooklyn Nets, and two seven-game wars against the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/06/20/nba-trades-boston-celtics/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/milwaukee-bucks/">Milwaukee Bucks and the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/06/20/nba-trades-boston-celtics/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/miami-heat/">Miami Heat. Unfortunately for them, it wasn’t enough to end up with the Larry O’ Brien trophy.

On the bright side, Boston’s core is very young, especially their two young stars, who have yet to hit their primes. Their title contention window is wide open, but as we all know, there are no guarantees in sports.

NBA Trades: 3 offseason trade ideas for the Boston Celtics

It was just a decade ago that most basketball pundits believed the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/06/20/nba-trades-boston-celtics/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/western-conference/oklahoma-city-thunder/">Oklahoma City Thunder were going to be perennial title contenders, yet after their 2012 run, they never made it back to another Finals. This should serve as a precautionary tale and a reason for the Celtics’ front office to be aggressive this offseason.

After giving out extensions to most of their young core, the Celtics will not be able to create cap space anytime soon. In most cases, a team in this situation only has the Mid-Level Exception and veteran minimums as a tool to upgrade their roster in free agency. Luckily for Boston, they possess a <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/06/20/nba-trades-boston-celtics/2/"https://hardwoodhoudini.com/2022/02/10/boston-celtics-targets-fournier-tpe-2/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">decent-sized Trade Player Exception worth $17.1 million., which is set to expire on July 17 of the current year.

This exception gives Boston the opportunity to add a very good player to their roster without having to sacrifice any of their current players. However, TPEs can’t be combined with other salaries to trade for a larger salary. But players can, just adding another contract would allow the Celtics to combine it with another player (like Daniel Theis), and trade for a player whose salary is too large for the TPE.

By the end of the Finals, Boston’s depth issues were a glaring weakness. Payton Pritchard and Daniel Theis were practically unplayable, while Derrick White and Grant Williams struggled mightily to hit open shots. Adding one more 3&D wing to their rotation seems like the most logical fit. Here are three players that the Celtics could add with their TPE.

NBA Trades: 3 offseason trade ideas for the Boston Celtics: Charlotte Hornets

Boston Celtics receive: Kelly Oubre Jr.

Charlotte Hornets receive: 20241st-Round Pick (Top-20 Protected)

Kelly Oubre Jr.’s past stint with the Warriors may turn off potential suitors, especially after they just won the title after letting Oubre walk in free agency and just adding three veteran-minimum free agents to replace him.

Yet outside of Golden State, Oubre has been a productive player throughout his career. His only real downside is that his three-point shot is inconsistent, having shot just 34.5% this year, including a disappointing 35% on wide-open catch-and-shoot threes.

In spite of his shooting deficiencies, he is a very athletic wing that can also ball handle a little and create his own shot. He shot 53% on shots where he took over seven dribbles and 62% on shots that were 10 feet or closer, according to <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/06/20/nba-trades-boston-celtics/2/"https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1626162/shots-dash" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBA.com tracking data.

While he may not address the Celtics’ shooting issues, he is a good finisher at the rim, which was also a weakness of this team. Adding his rim pressure capabilities could lead to wide-open three-pointers for Boston’s shooters.

On the other side of the court, he is very good at defending ball handlers and applying ball pressure. This could make an already elite defense even more dominant. Oubre is not the perfect fit, but the upside is intriguing enough to take a flyer on him.

NBA Trades: 3 offseason trade ideas for the Boston Celtics: Washington Wizards

Boston Celtics Get: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

Washington Wizards Get: 2024 1st-Round Pick (Lottery Protected), 2023 2nd-Round Pick (via ORL)

This would be Boston’s best-case scenario. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a starting-caliber shooting guard, who’s already proven that he can be an instrumental piece of a title team. As a very smart defender with very good size, KCP could legitimately match up with other teams’ guards and forwards.

He would fit like a glove in the Celtics’ switching defensive scheme. In a lineup that could feature Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Rob Williams, KCP, and reigning DPOY Marcus Smart, there is an argument that Caldwell-Pope is the “worst” defender of the group. Having KCP as your “worst” defender is a nightmarish proposition for opposing teams.

On offense, he is a reliable three-point shooter, shooting 42% on catch and shoot threes, including 43% on wide-open ones. He is also a player who plays within his role and does not take any ill-advised shots. According to <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/06/20/nba-trades-boston-celtics/2/"https://www.nba.com/stats/player/203484/shots-dash" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBA.com tracking data, 49% of Caldwell-Pope’s shots came without taking a single dribble.

This means he is either shooting the ball if he is open or he is making quick decisions and moving the ball forward. In other words, he does not waste time dribbling, and that is exactly the type of player that this team needs.

He would give the Celtics the knockdown shooter they so desperately need to open up the court for the Jays without having to sacrifice much on the other end of the court. Whether he would be coming off the bench and closing off games or starting, Caldwell-Pope would be the perfect addition to this team.
